Ferrari’s thirteenth

Ferrari’s thirteenth

GT & Sport Cars

Maranello, 4 December

Thirteen in eleven years; that’s how many awards Ferrari has had from Top Gear, one of the most authoritative motoring magazines in the world, published by the BBC. This year it fell to the 458 Speciale to get not just one, but two awards, being crowned “Supercar of the Year” and taking the “Car of the Year” prize from James May, one of the presenters of the famous TV programme that goes by the same name as the magazine.

Among the thirteen awards that have gone to the Maranello marque in just over a decade, highlights include a run of four wins in the supercar category: before the Speciale, the F12berlinetta (2012,) the 458 Italia (2009) and the F430 (2005) all took this prestigious title.

“I loved it, and what I loved was that I was still driving a 458, which is already my favourite car,” said May, referring to the Speciale. “But it was as if someone had gone over my sensory receptors with a whetstone and sharpened them up a bit.” As a previous owner of a F430 coupé and a current owner of a 458 Italia, James May is well placed to understand the technical innovations introduced on the 458 Speciale – including the unique Side Slip Control system which makes it easier to achieve car control on the limit, thereby greatly improving the driving experience.
