Mugello awarded Best Grand Prix of 2011
Scarperia, 23 January 2012 -The Mugello circuit was awarded the title ‘Best Grand Prix 2011′, the most important award in the world of motorsports for organisers of MotoGP races. The Ferrari race track was the best track worldwide amongst the circuits hosting World Championship races. The Trophy is directly committed by drivers, media and staff members through the International Road Racing Teams Association (IRTA).
“I consider this award a recognition of Italian excellence in the world,” Paolo Poli, Head of the circuit, said. “In a very significant year for our nation the award won by the Mugello circuit, organiser of the Italian Grand Prix, showed how the country knows how to give signals of absolute excellence. It knows how to answer the great challenges – with the strength of tradition and the quality of innovation – in the area of sports facilities. An area where the competition comes directly from nation states, very often emerging states, hoping to present themselves as the new point of reference.”
Important works have been carried out in 2011 at the Ferrari circuit: new tarmac, applied to the entire track with innovative techniques, and a new covered main grandstand, roofed with over 3,000 solar panels.
IRTA President Herve Poncharal said: “The best Grand Prix is selected by the teams and the teams discuss with the drivers, the technicians and the journalists. Therefore one doesn’t only award the track where the races are held, but the award goes to the entire organisation, considering that everyone feels right at home at the Grand Prix. Personally, I’m very happy that Mugello won this award for the fifth time. I’m glad that we’ll be back soon in Mugello: this track definitely deserves this award.”
Last year Dorna and the Mugello circuit signed an agreement regarding a multi-year contract with the Italian Grand Prix, which will continue to be held at the Tuscan circuit at least until 2016.
This year the World Championship race will be held in Mugello on 15 July.
