Scarlet ripple effect over electronic mail. Email yes or no: Ferrari opens the debate

It seems that a stone thrown into a lake really does spread waves in all directions. The decision taken by Ferrari last week to reduce its use of electronic mail – introducing a maximum of three internal recipients – has rekindled the debate on the subject both on the internet and in media all over the world. Today’s article in the Financial Times under the headline “Judgement Call” has taken the opinions of three managers and experts in the sector. The piece follows those published in recent days in respected news sources from the Wall Street Journal to CNBC, from the Daily Telegraph to the Corriere della Sera, too many to quote just a few lines here. But there are some articles online too such as China’s Ifeng.com, in which they analysed the pros and cons of Ferrari’s decision and its possible consequences. The opinions expressed have generally been positive, confirming that the problem of managing electronic mail affects so many of us to a greater or lesser extent. At Maranello the aim was to confront this with a different approach, without demonising anyone but by introducing rules that not only limit the problem but above all change habits, because prevention is always better than cure. The effects will be seen in the medium term but what is certain is that internal phone traffic has considerably increased in the last week…
