From Sonny Crockett to Magnum, Ferraris on the small screen

Maranello, 19 January

At the end of 2014, the media picked up on the fact that one of the two 1986 Ferrari Testarossas used in the third, fourth and fifth seasons of the TV series “Miami Vice” was up for sale on eBay. The car, priced at 1,750,000 dollars, was supplied to Universal Studios as part of an agreement, after the director Michael Mann had used a Chevrolet C3, disguised as a Ferrari Daytona. The car was originally black, but was painted white to make it more visible in the frequent night scenes in the serial. The Testarossa was usually driven by detective Sonny Crockett, (played by Don Johnson) who was teamed with Rico Tubbs (Philip Michael Thomas).

The predecessors. Ferraris have often featured on the big screen, as well as various TV series, which benefited from the image of the Prancing Horse. There was “Get Smart!” starring Don Adams as Maxwell Smart, who drove a 250 GT Cabriolet. Even more famous was the Ferrari Dino 246 GT which was driven by a character called Danny Wilde, played by the great Tony Curtis in “The Persuaders” series. The show played on the big difference between the American Wilde and the Englishman, Lord Brett Sinclair, played by Roger Moore; their friendly rivalry featuring in laid back adventures played out across Europe, featuring beautiful women, luxury cars and a subtle English sense of humour. The same car also featured in the series “Hart to Hart,” the transport of choice for Jonathan Hart (Robert Wagner) and his wife Jennifer (Stefanie Powers) a rich and happy couple who had fun solving crimes, along with Max (Lionel Stander) their good natured butler.

A speedy “P.I.”. Apart from Miami Vice, there was another TV series that owed a lot of its attraction to a Ferrari. Of course, we’re referring to “Magnum P.I.” who for no less than eight seasons and 162 episodes, brought a Ferrari 308 GTS to the screen. Thomas Magnum, played by the mustachioed Tom Selleck, was a private investigator who lived in an annex of a luxury villa on the seashore of the Hawaiian island of Oahu, which belonged to an eccentric crime writer Robin Masters, whose security he was responsible for. No less than five Ferraris – three different models – were used in the series; 1979 308 GTS, 1981 308 GTSi and the 1984 308 GTS Quattrovalvole.
