Maranello, May 15th

The internationally-renowned Chinese artist Liu Bolin is staging a live performance at the Museo Enzo Ferrari in Modena on Saturday, starting at 18.00. Famous for painting his body and face so that he quite literally “disappears” into the scenery behind him, Bolin will on this particular occasion be painting himself in the colours and forms of an Enzo Ferrari in the spectacular surrounds of the MEF in Modena. The public will be able to see the techniques used first-hand and the paintings on Bolin’s body and face. Photos of the performance, of which there will be just six signed prints, will be sold in leading international contemporary art galleries.

Like every artist, Liu Bolin makes no explanation of his art, although his “camouflage” work is known to have been inspired by the demolition by the Chinese authorities in 2006 of the Suo Jia Cun artist village in Beijing, where he worked. To bear witness to that painful experience, Bolin painted himself in the colours of the ruins and stood in front of what was left of his former studio. Bolin has said: “Chameleons have an extraordinary ability to change colour to blend in with their background. It’s like a self-protection mechanism. Human beings aren’t annimals because they don’t know how to protect themselves.”
