Salsomaggiore Terme, 17th May

The third day of Ferrari Tribute to 1000 Miglia featured the longest and most exciting stage with a dawn to dusk run of 723 kilometres.

At 5 in the morning, the group left the Eternal City of Rome still shrouded in mist and silence and headed for Viterbo, taking the historic via Cassia before going through the picturesque centres of Lazio and Tuscany, with its beautiful architecture and history, the roads closed for the event.

The route went down narrow alleys, past churches, gateways and medieval cathedrals, with crowds of fans of Ferrari and other marques bowled over by the magnificent sights. In a mirror image, the spectators were busy photographing the cars, while the crews in the Ferraris were taking their own shots of the scenes that unfolded in front of them, as they passed through Piazza del Campo in Siena, Piazza Dei Miracoli, the leaning tower of Pisa and the breathtaking sights from the Mura di Lucca, where the cars went by 10 metres above ground level on the wall.

The afternoon provided the most demanding section as the cars crossed the Apennines through the Futa and Radicosa passes, with over 160 kilometres of corners and hairpins.

Finally after 16 hours at the wheel, they arrived in Salsomaggiore Terme and could enjoy a well earned soak in the famous baths.

Tomorrow it’s up at dawn again as the Ferrari drivers set off on another adventure.
